Requirements

        SIGMA DELTA PI, the Spanish Honorary, invites all eligible undergraduate and graduate students of Spanish to apply for membership.  The qualifications for undergraduates are as follows: completion of 18 hours of college-level Spanish or the equivalent, including at least 3 semester hours of a course in Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization at the junior (3rd year level); rank in the upper 35% of his/her class (sophomore, junior, senior); and a G.P.A.  of 3.0 in all Spanish courses taken.  A student may be admitted as a member of the Spanish Honorary while enrolled in the required literature and culture course (i.e., SPAN 330, 340, 333, 343/SPAN 6- -) if the instructor certifies in writing that the student’s work is of “A” or “B” quality. 

        Graduate students may be elected to membership upon completion of 2 graduate courses in Spanish with an average, which if continued, will make them eligible for a graduate degree. Students who are currently in the last semester of their course work or who will not be on campus during the semester for which they are applying for membership (e.g., in a semester-long study abroad program) are not eligibleAll interested students should fill out an application form and return it to Dr. Sandra Dixon (Room 317A, Chitwood Hall) by 4.00 p.m. on FRIDAY, October 26. Please enclose the completed form and a check made out to “SIGMA DELTA PI” for thirty-five dollars ($35.00) in an envelope.  Forms are available at 317A Chitwood Hall.  Absolutely no application will be accepted without a check. The induction ceremony will be held on Friday, November 9. (Time and place to be announced).

Member Benefits

    National Recognition: West Virginia University’s Chapter Delta Tau has been recognized as an Honor Chapter two academic years in a row—2014-2015 and 2015-2016.  Out of more than 600 chapters, only 13 to 15 were granted this distinction.   Awards: In 2016, Delta Tau won first place in the 5th annual Sigma Delta Pi Facebook Competition and in 2015 the chapter was awarded second place in the Sigma Delta Pi Birthday Cake Contest.  Study Abroad: Members have exclusive access to undergraduate study abroad awards for study in Spanish-speaking countries. 

      Research: Graduate students may apply for research grants.  Distinctive Students:  Honors such as the Gabriela Mistral Award, the Mario Vargas Llosa Award, and the Ana María Matute Award are available.  Cultural Activities: In the past years, the chapter members have organized numerous Hispanic Festivals, a Spanish Conversation Partner Program, film series, bake sales featuring foods from the Spanish-speaking world, free tutoring for WVU students of Spanish, volunteer projects in the Morgantown community, and a Tapas Contest.  Develop a Professional Network: Members who are alumni keep in touch through our Sigma Delta Pi web page  (http://sigmadeltapi.studentorgs.wvu.edu/).  Develop lasting friendships: Our members are from all over the world, but they have one thing in common: love of the Spanish language and an admiration for the diverse cultures of the Hispanic world.  Through social media and travel, members keep in touch.
